Winter Break Packing Must-Haves

By Kristen Peuvion on November 22, 2014

Like most girls, whenever I’m about to go home for a weekend, a break or for the summer, I’m incapable of deciding what to pack. It takes me at least a week to make the final decision about what stays and what goes, and nine times out of 10, I end up dissatisfied with what I brought home.

There’s always something I wish I had brought home or something I wish I had left behind and since I basically bring my entire wardrobe down to school with me, what’s in my suitcase is pretty much all I’ve got once I’m home.

Bottom line: packing to go home is stressful.

I’m sure plenty of you are plagued with the same issue whenever it becomes time to go home, and with winter break coming up, most of you are probably dreading packing up the right clothes for a couple of weeks at home.

To make your lives a little easier, here’s a list of the must-have items you should have in your suitcase come winter break.

What to pack: Your favorite chunky sweater(s)

Whether you’re just going to be lounging around the house, hanging out with friends from high school or spending your weeks at countless family parties, your favorite chunky sweater will get you through it all.

It’ll be super comfy to wear around the house with some leggings, but it can also be dressed up for a night with friends or family. To dress up your sweater, try a pair of statement earrings, dark wash jeans and some flats with a pop of color.

What to leave: Every single sweater you own. Three will probably do the trick.

What to pack: Your ankle booties

Booties are this fall’s hottest footwear trend so feel free to wear them with anything and everything. Whatever you pair them with, whether it’s a casual outfit or something a bit fancier, ankle boots will look so fashion forward.

Plus, aside from New Year’s Eve, you probably won’t be attending any event that’s super fancy. For the parties that you do have, dressing up your ankle booties will work just fine!

What to leave: Heels. You most likely won’t wear them, but if you feel they are absolutely necessary, only pack one pair.

What to pack: Your leather jacket

Undoubtedly, you’ll probably go out with your high school friends when you go home at least once. You don’t want to be unprepared by not packing anything that’s appropriate for going out.

But you also don’t want to bring home a bunch of going out outfits either because that just isn’t practical. Your leather jacket is the perfect solution. Toss it on over a pair of jeans and a t-shirt and accessorize with some simple jewelry and you have a simple, yet chic, outfit to go out in.

What to leave: Tight dresses/skirts. There’s a time and a place for skin tight miniskirts and bandage dresses, and a night out at your local, hometown bar is neither.

What to pack: Your sweater dress

No matter where you are geographically, come winter break, the temperatures start dropping, at least a little bit. That doesn’t mean shorter hemlines are completely out of the question, though.

Whether you’re in the most freezing of temperatures in Minnesota or in the milder climate of Arizona, a sweater dress should definitely be in your suitcase for winter break.

A sweater dress worn with a pair of tights and boots is the perfect fall and winter dress ensemble to bring home. It can work for a family party or simply as a casual outfit.

What to leave: Shorts and summer dresses. Even if you are in a warmer state, it’s still winter. Give your summer clothes a break for a month or so and embrace the wintry season!

What to pack: A party outfit

With countless holiday parties to attend and New Year’s Eve, winter break proves to be a busy and social time of year! It also can be a pretty fancy time of the year.

So even though most of your break will probably be spent lying around the house in your comfy, casual clothes, there are times when dressing up will be necessary, whether you like it or not.

Don’t be caught off guard and leave yourself with the impossible task of finding the perfect party outfit the night before. Instead, pack one in your suitcase before you head home. You undoubtedly have a dress, romper, jumpsuit or skirt that will work for a holiday or New Year’s party, so pack it up!

What to leave: Every party dress/romper/skirt you own. You won’t have that many parties to attend. One show-stopping party outfit should do the trick.

So don’t stress about what to bring home this winter break. These few things, as well as a couple more basics like t-shirts and jeans, will give you just what you need for a week at home without packing up your entire closet.

Happy packing!
